The history of Jiu Jitsu for Gabriel Checco goes back to 2001, when he began training in Brazil. At the time he was working with his father as a part of his family’s business, making good money, but it wasn’t a fulfilling position. Last year he decided to Las Vegas, NV with his wife. It was there that his now partner—Mica, who’s been the owner of his own Jiu Jitsu school in Vegas for many years, had the idea to open a new academy together. Gabriel’s background in martial arts also extends into the mixed martial arts world with a 7-0-0 record under the Chute Boxe banner in Sao Paulo.
As a child, Gabriel’s mothernput him in different kinds of martial arts since he was so hyperactive and she wanted a way for him to focus. He studied Karate and Judo and, when he was old enough to choose what he wanted to do, he jumped into Jiu Jitsu. He admits, “That changed my life.”
The new academy is 3,000 square feet with classes for Jiu Jitsu, self-defense, and Judo as taught by Gabriel and Mica. Available for both children and adults, the programs as affiliated with Gracie Jiu Jitsu hold up the standards that have been developed by the Gracie Humaita team.
